History of Corpus Christi
Corpus Christi is now the sixth largest port in the nation. It was incorporated in 1852 and emerged as a major center for marketing and processing of agricultural commodities. This city began as a frontier trading post founded during the late 1830s by Colonel H.L. Kinney. This is known as Kinney’s Trading Post. It remained a settlement till the 1840s when the war with Mexico began. It was in 1946 that the city acquired the name Corpus Christi. It was formally incorporated as a city on September 9th, 1952. The city charter for Corpus Christi was established in 1876. The first ordinance of the city was adopted in January 1879. This city has a government headed by a mayor, city manager and 8 council members. The city manager is the CEO directed by the city council.
